2018-10-07 KILKEEL win Rossmore Cup

Kilkeel Golf Club win Rossmore Cup 2018.

Two weeks ago, a team from Kilkeel Golf Club travelled to Rossmore for the first leg of the final of the Cowdy Inter-Club Golf Association’s Rossmore Cup. The format of the competition is a team of 8 players with a handicap of 12-17 playing 4 matches of fourball betterball with the usual GUI handicap allowances being applied. The Kilkeel team performed brilliantly to come back up the road with a 3-1 lead to take into the second leg which was played in blustery conditions last Sunday, 7th October.

Prior to match, Leslie Edgar presented new team shirts to Club Captain Austin Crawford.

Since the Rossmore team have had good results away from home throughout the competition, the KGC team knew that only a top performance would bring the trophy to the Mournes.

Rossmore were fast out of the blocks and in the first match won 3&2 against Chris Heslip and James Greene.

The second match saw Brendan Scullion and Michael McAnulty get to the turn 2-up, but by the 13th the match was all square. Brendan stemmed the fightback with a 10 foot putt on the 13th for a half and then the home team took the initiative with wins on the 14th and 15th and a half on the 16th to go dormy. However a win on the 17th clinched a fine 3&1 victory.

In the third game, Club Captain Austin Crawford and Sean Hastings were 1-up after 9, then steady pars at 10, 11 and 12 put them 4-up with 6 to play. The Rossmore pair rallied to win 13 and 14 to bring it back to 2-up, but a fine tee shot by Sean on the 15th set them to dormy 3. A smart half on the 16th saw a 3&2 victory for Austin and Sean which meant that the final pairing of Mel Cunningham and Adrian McCartan were called in from the 15th (all square) as the Cup was won.

The Captain of the team (Club Vice-Captain) Shane Lowey thanked all who competed for the team throughout the competition (a total of 14 players who competed in previous rounds against Co.Armagh, Silverwood, Mayobridge and Spa) stating that all had played their part in winning the Rossmore Cup.
